I grew up in the Blue Ridge north of Asheville, NC. The University of Tennessee and geology were probably in my blood — both of my parents graduated with geology degrees from University of Tennessee, and as a kid I spent many Saturdays on The Hill cheering for the Vols. When it was time to choose a graduate school, I was finally able to combine my interests in geology with the University of Tennessee. The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences offered many opportunities, and allowed me explore these interests and grow my knowledge in geology. I found an excellent match in my advisor Dr. Robert Hatcher, Jr., who fueled my interests in field mapping, structure, tectonics, and Appalachian geology, and pushed me to excel. I completed field-based research projects that involved geologic mapping in the Inner Piedmont and Blue Ridge. The varied research tools available through the EPS allowed me to integrate different techniques—structure, petrology, U-Pb geochronology, geochemistry — to better understand a complete tectonic framework. During my Ph.D. I was offered an internship with the U.S. Geological Survey where I have now worked for over 10 years as a research geologist. My research with the USGS involves geologic mapping projects in the Blue Ridge, New England and the Adirondacks. These projects integrate different geologic techniques to understand the geologic framework and to address societally relevant geologic issues and hazards.
